Hermann spotted New Haven nine runs, but couldn’t overcome the large deficit and lost, 9-6, to the Shamrocks in a Four Rivers Conference baseball game last Thursday at Dick Ochsner Ballpark.
The Shamrocks’ win came two weeks after they lost at home, 8-0, to the Bearcats in a nonn-conference game.
New Haven scored two unearned runs in the top of the first, and the Bearcats continued their giving ways as they misplayed ground balls and made errant throws.
Hermann came to bat in the bottom of the fifth, trailing 9-0, and senior Justin Wurtz started things with a double to right. Senior Brett Eckelkamp followed with a single up the middle to score Wurtz.
Jake Schannuth, who had reached base on a fielder’s choice, scored on a double by Josh Kolbe. The Bearcats scored their third run of the inning with the help of the right-fielder’s error. Ben Held’s line drive got past the fielder, allowing Kolbe to score from second.
Hermann scored three more runs in the sixth, all being unearned, and the tying run came to the plate, but the Bearcats failed to score again.
Craig Winkelmann, Hermann’s catcher, led off the bottom of the seventh with a single off the pitcher’s glove, but he was left stranded and the Shamrocks escaped with a win.
In a non-conference game last Tuesday at Hermann, South Callaway scored an unearned run in the top of the eighth inning, then held on to defeat Hermann, 4-3.
