The Gasconade County R-1 Alumni Association awarded 12 grants this spring to Hermann High School students enrolled in a dual credit course.
Hermann High School offers six dual credit courses at $210 apiece. The grants were given at the amount of $105.00 a piece, the cost of half a dual credit course.
Students who received a grant were Emily Stuart, Audrey Fields, Emma Clark, Kelsey Kuehler, Brenna Bruckerhoff, Kaitlyn Garbs, Brett Eckelkamp, Evan Bean, Jessica Zeiss, Courtney Williman, Ashley Gerlemann and Joey Schebaum.
“The Dual Credit Scholarship program was the brainchild of Bob Bohl,” said Dr. Chris Neale, superintendent of the R-1 school district. “Bob came to the conclusion that dual credit courses provide the cheapest route to building a college transcript. As a result of his thinking and our discussions, we (the Community Foundation of the Hermann Area) decided to start a drive to endow a fund to provide scholarships last year. By the end of 2010, we had raised over $60,000 for that cause.”
Because the alumni association was already focused on scholarships, the Foundation asked them to consider administering the fund.
“The 12 grants that we presented is just a start for us,” said Dr. Neale. “Over time, we hope to build an endowment of sufficient capacity to cut tuition in half for every student taking dual credit at Hermann High School.”
The Alumni Association is able to make these grants possible through growing membership and constant donations.
