Friday will be the last day in the Hermann school district for varsity football coach and teacher, Brendan Gubera.
During last week’s closed session, the Gasconade County R-1 School District’s Board of Education granted a request from Gubera for early release from his contract.
Gubera, who resigned from his teaching and coaching position at Hermann earlier this winter, has been hired as athletic director and head football coach at Joplin McAuley High School in his home town. The openings at McAuley came up suddenly.
Gubera, the head football coach at Hermann the past three seasons, has also been teaching middle school physical education the last three years. He came to Hermann after serving as head football coach at McAuley High School for two years, winning the district championship in Class 1 both years.
Gubera is a 1995 graduate of Joplin High School, where he was an assistant football coach for six years before moving over to McAuley High.
Joplin High School was destroyed last year by an EF-5 tornado.
Although McAuley High School wasn’t damaged as badly, St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the K-5 elementary catholic school were demolished.
“They are still undergoing a rebuilding process,” said Gubera.
“Going back home now feels like the right thing to do,” he said.
Gubera’s 75-year-old father recently sustained injuries when a farm building he was working on collapsed on him. It was a building that was heavily damaged by the tornado. “He has really struggled to regain his health since that accident,” said Gubera.
Gubera’s wife, Julie, is teaching grades 7-8 at Chamois, and will join him in Joplin when the school year ends in May.
“We’ve really enjoyed it here,” said Gubera.
