Hermann Sand & Gravel, Inc. has begun a new venture for the 2012 river navigation season.
This year the company will charter the Mary Lynn a (3800hp St. Louis Ship Built 1957) from Missouri River Towing LLC and service river terminals on the Missouri River.
With increasing shipments out of the Hermann location, Hermann Sand & Gravel was looking for a larger boat to handle larger tows and this opportunity presented itself.
Hermann Sand & Gravel was able to get a contract with Agriservices of Brunswick Mo. to deliver fertilizer to Brunswick and grain to St. Louis, which will eventually go to the Gulf for export.
“What we have right here in Hermann is a world highway–the Missouri River,” said Capt. Steve Engemann. “Once you get freight on the water you are competing in a global market.”

Engemann believes barge transportation is the most economical environmental friendly form of transportation in existence.
He said one ton of cargo can go 589 miles on a gallon of fuel.
