The Downtown Deli & Custard Shoppe was acquired this week by an Arnold couple, Ash and Alicia Geers. The new owners took over the business at 216 E. First Street on Sunday, July 1.
Joan Kruse and Ruth Ann Elsenraat, the founding owners, opened their business 16 years ago on May 1 in a shoe store that had been operated by the late Gloria Sitton. Prior to that, it had been Daugherty’s Shoe Store.
Ash Geers, 34, who has been in the restaurant business since working at a Dairy Queen while he was a student at Kennett High School, said he doesn’t plan any changes. They will continue the business under the name Downtown Deli & Custard Shoppe.
Geers has been a restaurant manager for the past 14 years, and for the last eight he has managed First Watch restaurants in the St. Louis area. First Watch restaurants, started in the Bay area of San Francisco, caters to the breakfast clientele.
