Karinne Lane and Jamie Gleeson, a pair of juniors, led Hermann’s girls to a 60-20 season-opening basketball win at Montgomery County last Tuesday night at Montgomery City.
Lane, a point guard, scored 20 points, had nine rebounds, seven steals and six assists, while Gleeson recorded a double-double. The 5-10 forward scored 15 points and pulled down 13 rebounds.
The Lady Bearcats ran off from the non-conference foe from the opening tip, taking a 23-4 lead at the quarter with Lane scoring nine of her team’s points.
With just eight players dressed for the varsity, Coach Todd Anderson used his bench just as much as his starters.
If there were any drawbacks to their first game, it was in ball handling and at the foul line. The Lady Bearcats committed 23 turnovers and made just 12 of 25 free throws. But their pressure defense took its toll on the Lady Wildcats. Hermann finished with 21 steals.
After leading 33-9 at the half, Hermann turned it on again in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Wildcats 19-7 to build a 52-16 lead.
