Last Wednesday the shop in the vo-ag department at Hermann High School resembled a warehouse.
Future Farmers of America (FFA) members at the high school were busy sorting fruit and filling gift baskets with with oranges, apples, grapefruits, pears and pineapples.
Many FFA chapters across the country sell citrus for December delivery as their major fundraiser. At Hermann High School, fruit sales start in October and November.
The Hermann FFA chapter was chartered in 1947, and the sale of fruit for the holidays is believed to have started sometime in the early 1970s.
The annual fruit sales serve as the largest fundraiser for the Hermann FFA chapter. Doug Ridder, the Hermann FFA advisor, said the fruit sale is now the only fundraiser used to raise money for the chapter. The money is used for expenses to attend leadership conferences, state and national conventions throughout the year.
