Sparked by freshman Matt Hug, Hermann used a 15-2 run to finish the game and defeated California, 56-53, in the 3rd annual Missouri National Guard Shootout at Fleming Fieldhouse in Jefferson City on Saturday, Dec. 22.
The big momentum swing erased the edge the Pintos built with a run of their own. They had used a 16-4 scoring advantage from the second quarter to the third to take a 10-point lead. The score was 42-38 in favor of California heading into the final quarter.
That’s when Hug, a 6-2 forward, took over. He scored 15 of the Bearcats’ 18 points in the fourth quarter and was named the game’s MVP.
Craig Winkelmann, junior point guard, added 13 points. He knocked down a big 3-pointer down the stretch to send the Bearcats to their fourth win in nine games.
In addition to his game-high 22 points, Hug, who is Hermann’s sixth man, also pulled down eight rebounds, seven of them on the defensive end.
