The Gasconade County Assessor’s office mailed out nearly 8,300 personal property declaration forms on Thursday, Jan. 3, to property owners.
Joe Mundwiller, county assessor, is reminding taxpayers to return these forms.
A few years ago we started listing vehicles, trailers, mobile homes, boats, motors, trailers, campers and historic vehicles that were assessed the previous year on the top of the form,” said Mundwiller. “This should be most helpful to both the taxpayer and my staff. What taxpayers can do is examine this list. If an item is no longer owned, neatly cross out that item.
Mundwiller said the taxpayer will be assessed what they leave at the top. If a new item has been acquired, then list that in the appropriate section below. All farm machinery, all livestock and all business equipment will still have to be claimed in the appropriate spot.
“This retention of information keeps information correct for the current year and makes it easier on the taxpayers,” Mundwiller added. “This addition will reduce the time it takes for my staff to process the forms once they are returned. We’ve just finished up the 2012 tax year and many of the potential personal property problems were avoided by using correct and complete assessment lists.”
Taxpayers who need any more information should call the county assessor’s office.
Missouri Statute 137.280 calls for penalties to taxpayers for failure to return this form. The penalty for not returning this completed form is based upon the total assessed value. The penalties are printed on the form. Nothing has changed as far as what is assessed. The correctly completed form needs to be signed and returned by March 1.
