Coach Tim Spiers’ Bearcats, after losing their season-opener at Montgomery County, reversed the outcome and defeated the Wildcats, 52-24, in the consolation game of the South Callaway basketball tournament last Friday at Mokane.
Hermann used a tight 2-3 zone defense to stymie the Wildcats, and was superior on the backboards, grabbing 22 defensive rebounds.
Craig Winkelmann, junior guard, hit three 3-points in the opening quarter as Hermann took a 16-6 lead. Collin Hart nailed a 3-pointer and one other basket in the first quarter.
Hug and Schannuth scored 14 of Hermann’s 16 points in the third quarter. That set the tone for what was a solid performance for the Bearcats.
“That was probably the best zone we played all year,” said Spiers.
