Keeping our children safe

We all knew it was coming, even before the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Shootings at schools, like the one at Columbine High School in Colorado, were unthinkable and horrific. An entire nation mourned this kind of tragedy, just like it did after 9-11.
So when the Hermann public schools implemented a new security system this week that intercepts visitors at the front door, the board followed a national trend–do everything in their power to keep our children safe.
St. George Catholic School changed their system this past summer, mandated by the Jefferson City Diocese to improve security measures. So they installed new doors that had a buzz-in system whereby visitors would have to announce their business before being let into the building.
It’s costing taxpayer money all over this country, but school districts must take whatever precautions are reasonable and effective to try and strengthen the security of their buildings.
