Craig Winkelmann’s big second half sparked the Hermann Bearcats to a 55-53 win over Warrenton in the consolation title of the 34th annual Hermann Basketball Tournament last Saturday night.
The Warriors had taken a 44-40 lead into the final 8 minutes after outscoring the Bearcats 23-14 in the third quarter.
Trailing 46-42, Winkelmann hit two straight 3-point baskets that knotted the score at 48. Then after Warrenton regained the lead on a pair of free throws by Trevor Bradshaw, Winkelmann scored on a steal to even the score at 50. Three free throws, one by Winkelmann and two by sophomore Josh Schannuth, gave Hermann a lead they would not lose. Two more free throws by Winkelmann with 51 ticks on the clock put the Bearcats’ lead at 55-50, and the Warriors’ Alex Tonioli dropped in a harmless 3-pointer at the buzzer.
