Major upgrades will soon be made at the Hermann Senior Housing units, thanks to a nearly half-million dollar Community Development Block Grant that was received.
A federal grant of $462,468 has now been accepted by the HSH board of directors, who at its Jan. 17 meeting awarded bids for the renovations of the 50 apartments in 11 buildings.
“We plan to do substantial rehab of these units,” said Valerie Zaugg, manager of Hermann Senior Housing. “We will be making updates on the apartments, trying to make them more energy efficient and comfortable for the tenants.”
A new central air conditioning system will be installed, along with a heating system to replace the window units and baseboard heating that was there before.
New walk-in showers will replace the old ones, along with new water heaters and vanities in the bathrooms of each unit. Handicap stools will be placed in all the bathrooms.
Zaugg said there will be electrical work done with new outside light poles, along with new smoke detectors installed throughout the buildings. The smoke detectors will be wired so if one goes off, it will alert residents in all the units.
