Jonathan Baumstark, a senior at Hermann High School, is this year’s winner of the Gasconade County Math and Science Scholarship.
Baumstark was announced as the 2013 winner at halftime of last Friday’s Hermann-Owensville boys basketball game at Hermann. It is a $2,500 scholarship renewable for four years, totaling $10,000.
The scholarship was started by Gerald and Martha Ebker and is awarded each year to a graduating senior from Owensville or Hermann high schools.
There were five Hermann seniors and 13 from Owensville who were eligible to compete for the scholarship this year. These students had to meet certain criteria of the scholarship committee, and had to have a combined score of 50 in the math and science sections of the ACT. In addition, they had to have four credits of both subjects in their high school course load.
The students were involved in a very rigorous academic competition at Missouri Science & Technology where they completed a test.
Baumstark plans to attend the University of Missouri where he will major in biochemical engineering, with the possibility of also applying for medical school.
Abby Witthaus of Hermann and Asalee Biagioli of Owensville were among the three finalists for the scholarship. Emily Osbourne and Brooke Schneider, both seniors at Owensville High School, were among the top five.
Other students who competed for the scholarship this year were:
Hermann–Summer Schacht, Natalie Witte and Jessica Zeiss.
Owensville–Jerm Hinch, Matt Jones, Keaton Matheny, Trevor Nicks, Raymond Page, Kyli Pruitt, Claire Smith, Scarlett Warner, Jacob Williams and Megan Dunlap.
