Whatever happened to roller skating?
The thought of skating came to mind this week when I read in The Bearcat Echo 50 years ago, in the Advertiser-Courier, that the F.F.A. boys sponsored a skating party for the Future Homemakers of America. Back in those days, the F.F.A. was just for farm boys, and the F.H.A. was for the girls, and both were clubs at Hermann High School.
The “Bearcat Echo” was the HHS student newspaper and it reported on the skating party in 1963, when 71 students turned out.
The skating party was at the St. George High School gym, the school having just opened in the early 1950s. As I recall, roller skating was the brainchild of Fr. Colman, then pastor of the church and superintendent of the school. He had his own skates and was a pretty good skater.
