Progress in restoration of the oldest sections of Hermann’s City Cemetery is very evident if one takes the time to walk the cemetery or even to drive by or through the graveyard.
Stones once leaning at precarious angles or broken or buried now stand erect and secure for many years into the future. Cemetery maintenance, preservation and restoration are reflections of community pride. The restored gravesites are a tribute, not only to those whose burial sites they mark, but also to those in the Hermann area or with connections to the Hermann area who have contributed to their restoration since the project began in 2011.
To date, approximately 265 gravesites have been restored through The Brush & Palette Club’s efforts to raise nearly $64,000.
York Cemetery Service of Clarksburg has been responsible for the actual restoration work. The Brush & Palette Club is an agency partner with the Community Foundation of the Hermann Area on this project. During 2011 and 2012 through two fundraisers each year, work has continued until funds are depleted.
Currently the coffers for this project are nearly empty, but hoping to move forward with the restoration in 2013, a fundraiser for the project is set for Friday, March 15, at Hermann Hill Banquet Center. The event is a dinner, silent auction and program. A social hour and the silent auction begin at 5:30 p.m. with the dinner and program to follow at 6:30. Reservations are $50 per person. Sponsorship opportunities are also available at the $250 and $500 level for four and eight dinner tickets respectively. The deadline for reservations is March 8. An opportunity to preview and bid on the auction items is scheduled for March 13 and 14 at the Community Meeting Room on Schiller Street.
