The Hermann Bearcats open their 2013 spring baseball season this week in the Four Rivers Classic. They are scheduled to play at home Wednesday against St. James.
Monday’s game at Rolla was postponed because of wet grounds. It has been rescheduled for Thursday, March 21, at Rolla starting at 4:30.
This will be the 28th season the Bearcats have opened under Head Coach Allen Speckhals, and he will field a young team. Just one senior, infielder Bryce Kuhn, is on the roster.
There are nine sophomores and seven freshmen on this year’s team, some of whom will see action.
Hermann could host games in the Four Rivers Classic if it finishes third in its pool. Rolla and St. James are the other two schools.
The first, second and third place finishers will play in a four-team bracket on Saturday at a site to be determined by results of pool play.
Coach Speckhals set his opening day starting pitching with lefty Grant Ruediger and Ben Held sharing mound duties. Both are juniors.
When the Four Rivers Classic is completed, the Bearcats travel to New Haven on Tuesday, March 26, and play at home on Thursday, March 28, against Borgia.
