Win No. 800 for Hermann Coach Linda Lampkin came in the Lady Bearcats’ first match of the 58th annual Hermann volleyball tournament last Tuesday evening.
They defeated Owensville in two sets, 25-21, 26-24. Teams play two-game matches in pool play.
It was a struggle for the Lady Bearcats, who appeared to play nervous in hopes of producing the milestone win for their coach, who is in her 34th season as Hermann’s head coach.
Hermann had leads of 16-12 and 20-16, in the first game, but each time they were hurt by their own mistakes that allowed the Dutchgirls to stay close.
Kirsten Leimkuehler, senior outside hitter, had one of her best performances in the Owensville match, knocking down key kills to keep the Lady Bearcats in the lead.
In the second set, Hermann had a 17-14 lead only to see it disappear when the Dutchgirls scored five straight points. Owensville led 24-22 and was serving when Jamie Gleeson registered a kill and the Dutchgirls made an attack error, knotting the score. Leimkuehler then added a tip kill and Cameron Hackmann, a sophomore, ended the match with a kill, giving Lampkin her 800th win as Hermann’s coach.
They presented her the game ball and a spray of flowers as the announcement was made recognizing the big win.
Gleeson finished with 10 kills and six digs, while Kali Stiers had 24 assists and 10 digs.
Leimkuehler recorded eight kills in 14 attempts for a hitting percentage of .500, and added five digs.
