The arctic cold front that swept over much of the nation dropped close to a foot of snow in some parts of rural Hermann Sunday before temperatures dipped well below zero. The National Weather Service in St. Louis said it was the coldest outbreak the area has seen in two decades.
Many events were canceled on Sunday and Monday, and downtown Hermann businesses kept their doors closed on Monday as things came to a standstill because of the frigid blast. Readings of 11 below zero were reported here Monday and Tuesday.
The deep snow Sunday followed a smaller snowfall on New Year’s Day, when 2-3 inches were reported.
Students in the Gasconade County R-1 School District have had an extended Christmas holiday. They haven’t returned to the classroom and have been out of school since Dec. 19.
