Hermann turned back Steelville, 53-42, in the consolation semifinals of the Owensville boys’ basketball tournament last Friday, but the Bearcats had trouble hanging onto big leads.
After jumping out to a 12-2 lead, the Bearcats built a 15-7 lead at the quarter. Josh Schannuth converted a three-point play late in the period to put Hermann on top 15-4.
The Cardinals outscored the Bearcats 14-8 in the second quarter , leaving Hermann with a 23-21 halfime advantage.
Then the Bearcats dominated the third quarter after Josh Oetterer opened the second half with two straight baskets. Craig Winkelmann canned a pair of free throws after a technical foul was whistled against the Cuba coach with 2:59 to play in the third quarter. That gave Hermann a 35-21 lead and the ball.
Hermann took a 43-29 lead into the final quarter after once leading by 19 points.
Steelville outscored Hermann 13-10 in the final 8 minutes.
The Bearcats made 17 of 20 free throws, but they struggled from 3-point range, hitting just 2 of 15 shots (13.3 percent).
Winkelmann and Matt Hug led Hermann with 13 and 11 points, respectively, while Oetterer chipped in eight. Collin Hart dished out eight assists. Shawn Ryerson and Adam Volner scored 17 and 13, respectively, for Steelville.
The Owensville tourney finally got started last Thursday after three days of postponements due to the severe winter weather.
Bearcats lose to Linn
Hermann lost its first-round game to Linn, 53-51, the second time this season the Bearcats have lost to the Wildcats.
The Bearcats took a 44-40 lead into the final quarter but couldn’t hold it, scoring just 7 points in the final 8 minutes.
Hermann took a season-high 29 3-point shots and made 11 of them. Craig Winkelmann, who led the Bearcats with 22 points, made 6 of 10 shots from behind the arc, while Matt Hug hit 5 of 12 and finished with 15 points.
