There’s a lot buzz going around for the 100-year celebration of basketball at Hermann, Feb. 1. Players will be recognized, by decade, between the third place game and championshp game of the Hermann Tournament.
That same Saturday night, Steve Wieschhaus will be signing his new book, The Hermann Double Team. A Small Town Hoops Story.
At a recent Mizzou basketball game, Cliff Wieth (Class of 1966) tells me that he was discussing the Feb. 1 celebration of HHS basketball with Alvin “Squeaky” Marquart of Washington, former Franklin County treasurer. Marquart was broadcasting games on a Union radio station when Hermann and St. George high schools were enjoying success on the hardwood in the late 1960s. Wieth and Marquart both said they plan to be at the 100th anniversary celebraton. Marquart’s late wife, Opal Schermann, was a graduate of Hermann High.
