Craig Winkelmann scored a season-high 28 points to lead fourth-seeded Hermann to a 66-58 win over No. 5 seed Warrenton in the 35th annual Hermann Invitational Basketball Tournament on Tuesday night.
The Bearcats received much-needed defensive spark in the fourth quarter from reserves Garrett Leimkuehler, a freshman, and Jordan Leicht, a junior. Leimkuehler also fueled the offense by scoring all nine of his points in the final quarter. He came up with four steals and made 6 of 7 free throws down the stretch.
The score was deadlocked when Hermann’s Josh Schannuth hit a basket to start the fourth quarter, giving his team a 43-41 lead. Schannuth scored three key baskets in the final 8 minutes.
Hermann will play top-seeded Montgomery County in the winners’ bracket semifinals on Thursday night at 6 o’clock. Montgomery rolled over Chamois, 54-20 in the earlier first-round game at the high school on Tuesday.
