Many turn out for Hermann’s 100 years of basketball recognition night

A weekend that brought freezing rain Friday and Saturday, creating dangerous driving conditions, didn’t dampen the spirits of those who came here to celebrate 100 years of basketball in Hermann last Saturday night. It was a turnout that was surprising to many, considering the weather.
The idea to observe 100 years of basketball in Hermann came up several years ago when Doug Smith, former girls’ coach, made school officials aware of the approaching anniversary. Smith was doing some research on Hermann basketball, and a committee was formed before Christmas this past December to hold a night that would recognize both Hermann and St. George schools.
The long-awaited night to recognize players, coaches and managers from Hermann and St. George high schools who were part of local basketball history, was tied into Steve Wieschhaus’ book signing.
