Top-ranked Hermann girls suffer first defeat of the season

In a clash of the state’s top two Class 3 girls’ basketball teams Monday night at Hermann, the unbeaten and No. 1 ranked Lady Bearcats fell to No. 2 St. James, 67-63, in a classic battle.
Hermann led most of the first half, and then the Lady Tigers found their range from the perimeter and buried four of their 11 3-pointers in that quarter. They outscored the Lady Bearcats 18-11 in the third quarter, and the score was tied 39-39 going into the final 8 minutes.
St. James junior guard Ashlee Marlatt made five 3-pointers and finished with 19 points, while freshman forward Devin Fuhring scored 20 points.
Marlatt hit two more 3-pointers in the fourth quarter as St. James outscored Hermann 17-13.
Hermann senior guard Karinne Lane turned in an outstanding performance, pouring in 30 points, grabbing seven rebounds and picking up four steals. She made three of her four 3-point attempts from the field and was 9 for 10 from the free throw line.
Junior guard Tesla Ruediger scored 14 points and added four three steals and four assists, while senior Jamie Gleeson finished with nine points and eight rebounds.
The loss was Hermann’s first in 19 games this season. St. James is now 20-1 overall.
St. James defeated Hermann in the junior varsity game, 51-30.
Emily Engemann had eight points for Hermann and Kaitlyn Peacock added seven.
