Following a pretty solid first quarter last Friday night against Union, the Bearcats’ defense fell apart and the Wildcats came away with a 68-62 Four Rivers Conference win at Hermann.
Union outscored Hermann 28-17 in the second quarter to take a 37-33 halftime lead.
Hermann, behind the shooting of senior Craig Winkelmann and junior Josh Oetterer, played Union even in the third quarter
The Bearcats fell behind by nine points in the final 8-minute period, then cut the deficit to one point. But the Wildcats held on for just their second conference win of the season. They are 8-13 overall.
Winkelmann scored nine of the Bearcats’ 14 points in the fourth quarter. He finished with 12 points.
Hermann fell to 3-4 in the league and 9-16 overall.
Sophomore Matt Hug led Hermann with 16 points and Oetterer also had 12 points and four rebounds. Josh Schannuth tossed in 10 points.
Union sealed the win at the free throw line, where they canned 11 out of 13 charity tosses in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats were 21 for 23 at the line.
Hermann, meanwhile, made 9 of 15 foul shots.
Union’s Nick Ziegler led all scorers with 24 points. Bunch had 11 and Brian Borgmann, the Wildcats’ 6-9 senior center, finished with 10.
It was senior night for the Bearcats’ Collin Hart, Winkelmann, TJ Garbs and Lucas Landolt, who were honored before the game.
In the junior varsity game, Union slipped by Hermann, 54-52.
The Bearcats led 26-22 at the half and 39-38 after three quarters.
Freshman Trey McKague led Hermann with 14 points, and Isaiah Eldridge added 11.
