The Bearcats this week are looking to get back on the winning track after their brief winning streak was snapped. A 8-6 win over the New Haven Shamrocks on April 13 was the fourth consecutive victory for the ‘Cats. It also was the last win for Hermann going into Monday afternoon’s contest with the Sullivan Eagles. That is, weather permitting. Hermann Head Coach Alan Speckhals earlier Monday morning was keeping

Hermann's Andrew Budnick tries to help himself by laying down a sacrifice bunt in the game against Van-Far last week.

Call it the Freaky Friday factor: It’s a home game, but it’s not really a home game. Thanks to some schedule juggling to get in a baseball game despite a wet field north of here, the Hermann Bearcats wound up wearing their road grays Friday, even though they were playing at Dick Ochsner Field, their home diamond. Home team or visiting squad, the Bearcats behind sophomore Andrew Budnick overcame a

Bearcats pitcher Andrew Budnick fires a pitch to a St. James Tiger in Monday afternoon's 4-0 Hermann victory.

It might not have been a masterpiece painted Monday afternoon by sophomore pitcher Andrew Budnick against the St. James Tigers, but it was about as close as anyone can get. Budnick faced only four batters over the minimum in throwing a 4-0 shutout. After Budnick retired the side in order in the top of the 1st inning, his teammates put together a walk, a single and double to get on

It didn’t take long for the baseball schedule to get overhauled — and in a big way. Almost 20 Junior Varsity games put on the schedule at the beginning of the season have been scratched, the result of too few players. One of those JV game dates, April 10, now will be used as the on-again, off-again make-up date for the game between Hermann and Van-Far, which so far has

In the early part of a high school baseball season, runs are like bananas — they tend to come in bunches. Take this past Saturday’s Four Rivers Classic playoff games of 3rd-Place teams Hermann, St. James and Owensville. Pitchers’ duels they were not. Owensville bested Hermann in the second game in the Dutchmen’s 7th-inning at bat, pushing across six runs to take the contest 13-12. If a Bearcat pitcher is

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A Louisville squad given little chance of advancing past its first NCAA Tournament game is still hanging around, poised to make a Final Four run. That’s what tournament wins can do for a squad. With victories over UC Irvine and Northern Iowa, the Cardinals’ outlook is much different than it was after losing two of three entering the tournament. Fourth-seeded Louisville (26-8) is preparing for a
