The American holiday of Thanksgiving is here and with the holiday, a time of giving thanks for the blessings bestowed upon us. As we reflect on the previous year we must be grateful for the community of Hermann and the value of education they hold dear. In our great country children are granted a free public education for all. We are blessed to have every student beginning at age 5 come to our schools.
The community of the Hermann School District voted and approved a no-tax-rate bond issue in August of 2016. With that revenue school district facilities have been upgraded. The roof at Hermann High School underwent construction with drains being lowered to prevent water from pooling, all seams and edges treated, and a complete spray coverage of the roof. The roof comes with a 20-year warranty and is expected to last 30 years. At Hermann Elementary School the roof was torn off and a replacement roof of pea gravel ballast was installed. A slope was added to the roof to prevent water from pooling on the roof. At HHS LED lighting was installed. The energy efficiency lighting is projected by the electrical engineers to recover the cost within 7 years, allowing for significant energy savings in the future. The track at Bearcat Memorial Stadium was resurfaced and sealed. Next summer the Middle School will have a new HVAC system installed in the gymnasium. Additionally, the HMS flat roof will have a complete tear off and be replaced with pea gravel ballast.
Additionally, the tax-payers of the Gasconade Co. R-I District approved a $.50 tax levy increase beginning in the fall of 2017. The additional revenue has allowed for the purchase of technology devices for our students. It is projected that with the tax levy increase as well as donations, students in grades K-12 will have individual devices for use in the classroom. We are very excited about this possibility for our students. Additional resources for support for student learning have been purchased including Science texts and supplies at HMS, a new writing program for all SPED students, Writer’s Workshop Mentor texts at the elementary, additional supplies for every classroom, HMS MakersSpace STEM classroom equipment and supplies, HHS Math (Algebra I & II, Calculus) texts, and HHS anatomy texts.
The support of the taxpayers, as well as the many community affiliates, make a difference in the education of our students. We take time, today, to say thank you. Our students are the future. You are helping build the future through your support.
