County government’s Buildings & Grounds, Jail funds take hits in 2017

The Gasconade County Courthouse.

The various funds within the Gasconade County operating budget have held up well this year, county officials say — with two notable exceptions.
The Buildings & Grounds and Jail funds have taken hits this year and will end the fiscal year on Dec. 31 showing a deficit.
The red ink might be disappointing to county administrators, but it doesn’t come as a surprise.
Indeed, the Sheriff’s Department’s Jail Fund — which covers the cost of housing prisoners in other counties’ jails — is at the mercy of state government. A county receives reimbursement for its housing costs from state government through the Missouri Department of Corrections. However, state government does not reimburse counties at the same amount paid out by the counties.
