The Hermann Advertiser-Courier (AC) has a new editor. John Buckner arrived last week to take over the reporting duties from Buck Collier. Buckner comes to town after having served as managing editor of The Rolla Daily News. "Rolla's a great town, but I wanted to continue small-town storytelling at a newspaper that I felt was more sustainable," he told the AC. "I loved working with the folks in city and county government and the first responders—just so many hard-working wonderful people. It's why people like me love local news. The connections you forge by writing about people and their busy lives aren't soon forgotten and I want to be a part of that in Hermann, which as everyone knows, is quite unique." He was raised on a beef cattle/grain crop farm near Mexico and has experienced a varied career path. After attending Mizzou, he served as a land management wildlife biologist for The Missouri Department of Conservation, played in a touring rock and roll band based in Atlanta, GA. and traveled and worked with international marketing companies for clients like McDonalds, Kraft Foods and John Deere. He was an executive editor for Farm Journal and ran his own entertainment newspaper, covering eight counties in the Little Dixie area. Buckner says he likes the creative process and team effort of producing a newspaper. He wants to bring some of that creativity to the digital side of AC, for those subscribers looking for their local news in a different format. "Everybody has been really welcoming and honest with me a bout what they expect from their hometown paper," he explained. "I listen carefully to both the praises and the concerns because I always want the AC to be a better paper tomorrow than it is today. I think Cathi (Utley), Patty (Blankenship) and Sara (Rowe) want that too, so with a little patience, I think the town of Hermann will be pleasantly surprised.
