A small bank founded in Rhineland during the Great Depression has grown into a banking system that has five facilities in three area counties. Now it's time for a celebration to mark its 75th anniversary.
Peoples Savings Bank is observing its 75th "birthday" at the city park in Rhineland on Saturday, Sept. 11, with a public reception.
The bank opened on Aug. 13, 1935, with assets of $130,000, and made it through some difficult times. In reality, it had picked up a void left in the tiny Montgomery County community after the old Farmers Savings Bank was closed during the Depression. That bank had been established in 1905.
