120 years ago

   At Stony Hill Tuesday, a large barn owned by Gottlieb Gumper, blacksmith, was entirely consumed by fire causing a loss of 50 loads of hay and a lot of farm machinery.

   The military and civic societies of Herrmann have arranged for a grand celebration to be held at the fairgrounds October 2 to commemorate the grand victories that our army and our navy achieved over the common enemy, the Spaniards.


70 years ago

    The White Way lights for the Hermann business area came on for the first time Friday night. There are 31 lights which replace the former nine lights in the area.

   Gasconade County had a total registration of 697 during the selective service registration between August 30 in September 18. This included all veterans and non-veterans, single or married, between the ages of 18 to 25 inclusive.

   Gov. Thomas E Dewey, Republican candidate for president, will speak from the rear platform of his special train on the Missouri Pacific tracks here Saturday October 2, at 7 PM.

   The Hermann area hospital district board of directors voted Monday to call a bond issue election on October 29 to vote on $375,000 in matching funds to build a hospital here.


45 years ago

   The Hermann City Council passed an ordinance at a recessed meeting at the German school building Monday night to bring the city’s drunken driving law in conformity with the state statue on driving while intoxicated.

   Quick action by a passing motorist and the Berger fire department Thursday night averted serious damage to a barn owned by  the Schuut brothers on route 2.

   Two bus groups, one from St. Louis and one from Springfield, toured Hermann last week.

   Gary Lloyd and Dr. George Workman posted an 18 hole score of 63 to claim first place in the championship flight of the Louter Shore Country Club’s best golf, best shot, golf tournament last Sunday.
