On Wednesday, Dec. 31, at midnight the bell will toll at the German school and Hermann as it has for many years. The New Year’s Eve tradition dates to the 1940s.

On Tuesday night, Dec. 16, the VFW Post 4182 and ladies auxiliary honored Mark Henning of Hermann with its life-saving award. Penning is credited with saving the life of a man from St. Louis who was swimming in the Missouri River during October.

The third annual Christmas concert held at the historic St. Martins church in Stark and Burke on Friday, December 12, was well attended.

Hermann’s girls defeated previously unbeaten St. Francis Borgia 58 to 56 last Tuesday at Washington in a wild and thrilling finish.

Santa Claus paid an early visit to Hermann last week when he visited the Frene Valley Health Center last Friday for the annual Christmas party given for the residents. Youngsters from the kids in action daycare center visited with residents.

The first baby to be born at the Hermann Area District Hospital in the new year 1973 will be the winner of an array of prizes to be awarded in the annual baby derby sponsored by The Advertiser-Courier in cooperation with 16 Hermann business places. The 1972 baby derby winner was Holly Christine Weddle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Weddle of Herrmann.

A suit by landowners along the former Missouri Kansas Texas right-of-way from St. Charles to Sedalia is still pending in federal court in St. Louis. The land owners contend the federal law amounts to the government taking their property without compensation.
