Meeting of the Wine Committee
Mr. Michael Poschel was elected President and Mr. George Husmann as secretary. Resolved that the committee, as such, buy forty gallons of the best Catawba wine and send it as a gift to the Sanity-Fair*. Resolved, that all wine-growers of Hermann be urgently requested to make contributions of either wine or money, according to their ability, that these be delivered to Mr. Rippstein.
”Santity-Fair” is what was printed in the newspaper and probably refers to the Sanitary Fairs held during the Civil War that was a private relief agency that helped support sick and wounded soldiers.

Beginning Saturday, May 1, 1897, The Advertiser-Courier will be published every Saturday instead of Wednesday of each week.

Mrs. Sophia Vogle, daughter of the late Joseph Sperry, who lived at the mouth of Coles Creek, 4 miles west of Hermann, last Saturday threw her two children in the Mississippi River from the ferry boat running between South St. Louis and East Carondelet and then plunged after them. The children were rescued but Mrs. Vogel was drowned.

F H Meyer sold the White House hotel to C A Maxeiner at $13,000.

Things are coming down to prewar prices; soda pop is again selling at five cents in Hermann.

A cloudburst here Friday caused the rushing of water 2 feet deep in some streets and alleys.

The Missouri River, as a result of nearly daily rains throughout the Northwest and Central states, is on a rampage, reaching the flood stage of 21 last weekend, and then following more rain, climbing to the 23.5-foot stage yesterday. All low lands along the Missouri are submerged and covered by a sea of muddy water.

Tourism is Hermann’s future, Stephen Raiche of Columbia, chief research historian of the state’s store survey and planning office, told representatives of Hermann’s historic and civic organizations last Wednesday. He said the community’s greatest asset is its tourist trade in it’s going to get bigger and better. He remarked that it is amazing that the town should have such a national reputation historically.

Leroy Kíbe and Florence will close their shoe store operation tomorrow. They have been in the present location on Schiller Street for 26 years.

Too many ducks in the pond may be becoming a problem here. The ducks have been a problem for motorists, who have had to dodge them while driving on Washington Street.

The results are in from Jerry D Meads, a new world international wine competition in Claremont. California, and Hermann’s Hermannhof winery was a big winner.

Roger, Darlene, Amber, Andy and Chris, Sean and Max and Connie Aubuchon of Hermann visited me Easter Sunday.

At Easter Sunday mass, the infant daughter of Jeff and Marsha Hagedorn was baptized by Fr Tom and was given the name of Valerie Michelle; a reenactment of Jesus writing to Jerusalem was held March 23 at the Hermann United Methodist Church.

Danny McDonald was a triple winner as the Hermann boys track team placed second in the Linn Relays last Thursday.

L and S equipment of Hermann recently received the John Deere signature dealer awards.
