Sun, warm temps greet start of spring sports seasons

Posted on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at 1:44 pm

The HHS baseball, golf and track-and-field teams started workouts Monday.

The frost that coated windshields Monday morning was long gone before the Hermann High School spring sports teams gathered in the afternoon for their first day of activity to kick off a new season.
Baseball Head Coach Wayland McKague worried aloud last week that a chance of a return of winter weather might force his squad inside for workouts in the early days of the hardball season.
Indeed, weather forecasts included a chance of rain late in the day Monday and much better chance of rain and storms on Tuesday for the Mid-Missouri region.
That would dampen the baseball team and the track-and-field and golf teams, which also had first-day gatherings Monday.
While spring sports teams could become active on Feb. 27, actual competition won’t take place until later this month.
The baseball Bearcats will begin facing opposition on Friday, March 17, at Crawford R-2 High School.
Head Coach Jeremy Hosick is scheduled to lead his golf team into its first action Wednesday, March 22, by hosting the Hermann Open at Loutre Shore Country Club.
Track-and-field, under Head Coach Josh Vinyard, is set to have its first meet Thursday, March 23, when it joins Owensville in a tri-meet at Pacific.
Unlike baseball, which has 10 home regular-season games scheduled (12 games on the road), the golf and track-and-field teams will be performing only twice each before a home crowd.
The track-and-field squad begins the season with the Hermann Open on march 23 and then doesn’t return home for a meet until Tuesday, April 25, for the Hermann Invitational.
The golf team hosts St. Clair on Friday, March 24, and Sullivan on Wednesday, March 29.  Those are the only home matches on the schedule.
For the baseball Bearcats, after the opener with Crawford County R-2, Hermann will compete in the annual Four Rivers Classic.
The first game is set for Monday, March 20, at Dick Ochsner Ball Park against Wright City High School. The second game for Hermann is the next day, Tuesday, March 21, at Pacific.
Not on the schedule are the tournament’s final games held on the Saturday. The pairings of teams will depend on how the various teams do in their first two games of the tourney.
Of note on this year’s schedule is a doubleheader with Wright City here on Saturday, April 1, beginning at 10 a.m.
