Pastor Dave Thomas’s alter ego
“. . . My daddy was poor,” said the clown, known as “August” in a YouTube channel video. “We tried to raise corn, but the birds had to get on their knees to eat that stuff. We tried to grow chickens, but neither one of them growed. Pappa said it just means we’re plantin’ ‘em too deep.”
What is a little hard to believe, is that clown acting on YouTube is the same person that is the pastor at the Hermann Community Christian Church on 1st Street.
“Belief” is a word that surfaces when in the presence of a good actor because it can be hard to “believe” the person is the same as the character portrayed on stage or in a film. Pastor Dave Thomas and August the clown, one in the same, would be the first to share the old adage, “Never judge a book by its cover” and he says he’s living proof. I “believe” him. That’s not too big a chasm to cross when you can still find “brush arbor” preachers in the Ozarks and the long tradition of show business barkers (or evangelists), who’s very existence depends on true believers.
Pastor Thomas comes from an unconventional background and his life experiences bleed into his faith and his faith bleeds into those within earshot.
