With senior forward Brooke Grosse leading the way, the Hermann Varsity Lady Bearcats opened the Montgomery County Invitational Tournament in a big way Monday night — routing the Silex Owls 67-14.
Grosse registered 17 points — including an impressive 9-for-10 night at the free-throw line — and she blocked four shots.
Grosse was one of three Lady Bearcats scoring in double figures on a night in which all players on the roster broke into the scoring column.
Junior guard Allison Stiers and junior forward Emma Godat each had 12 points.
While Silex brought a full complement of 12 players, Hermann Head Coach Todd Anderson was limited to a roster of only 8 players in the tourney’s opening-round game — a result of the front-line Junior Varsity players being held out for this week’s Hermann JV ladies’ tourney that began last night.
What that meant for the Varsity team was a lot of playing time for all the players. Everybody played parts of all four quarters.
The time of the hardwood was not wasted by the substitutes. Godat knocked down five buckets, including a 3-pointer, and blocked a shot on the night; junior Megan Schneider played big on the boards, pulling down a team-high 9 rebounds; and junior Allison Williman worked her way to the basket several times.
Joining Grosse, Stiers and Godat in scoring were Brune with 4, Quincy Erickson with 3 (a bucket from beyond the arc), senior Tess Schannuth with 7, Schneider with 6 and Williman with 6.
Even though Silex didn’t offer much resistance, one glaring note of accomplishment for the Lady Bearcats was that they committed only 8 turnovers in the game.
Also, Hermann registered 15 steals on the night with Grosse accounting for a team-high 4 steals.
The Vasity ladies will play tonight at 7 against the Clopton Lady Hawks.
