Hermann Area Chorus presents their Fall Concert

The Hermann Area Chorus presented their Fall Concert last Sunday afternoon to a good crowd in the Hermann High School (HHS) gymnasium. The group performed selections within patriotic themes  (Star-Spangled Banner, Battle Hymn of the Republic), religious themes (Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel?) and some English madrigals (Come Celebrate this Festive Day, How Fair a Rose? and All Ye, the Music Makers). A special intermission of entertainment was provided by the HHS cast members, who performed selections from their upcoming musical, Godspell, under the direction of Melanie Behrens and Patrick Dell.

Afterwards, the women’s chorus sang A Dream Within a Dream, with lyrics based on the poetry of Edgar Allan Poe, arranged by Ruth Morris Gray. The number that followed was a hit song for entertainer Bette Midler in the 1970’s, but “Lullaby of Broadway” was popular in the golden era of Hollywood.

Director Ernestine Mueller finished the last portion of the concert with songs familiar to many in the audience, leading with “Corner of the Sky,” from the musical Pippin.

Everything has its season

Everything has its time

Show me a reason and I’ll soon show you a rhyme

Cats fit on the windowsill

Children fit in the snow

Why do I feel I don’t fit in anywhere I go?

It’s a song about finding a place in the world where the spirit can run free, finding your “corner of the sky.”

After some introspection of Corner of the Sky, the singers followed up with fun selections from the musical “My Fair Lady,” such as Get me to the Church on Time, On the Street Where You Live and I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face.

The “Old Irish Blessing,” the closing song is always appropriate to send friends on their way, wishing them the best.

May the road rise up to meet you.

May the wind be always at your back.

May the sun shine warm upon your face;

the rains fall soft upon your fields

and until we meet again,

may God hold you in the palm of his hand.

Director Mueller, the accompanists Elaine Pehle and Susan Hughes and the Hermann Area Chorus covered a lot of musical ground, the selections hitting the right chord for a time of year that moves into the chill and isolation of winter, warmed up by family holidays and the blessing that hope is always right around the corner.
