Henry Brandhorst of Woollam yesterday returned from Vandalia, where he sold the cattle he drove through here two weeks ago.
A team attached to a farm wagon belonging to Charles Grass last Wednesday ran away on Front Street upsetting the wagon in front of Eberlin’s Hardware Store. Aside of a broken pole, no damage was done.
A new railroad, the M.K. & E, is now running regular trains from St. Charles to Rhineland. A fine passenger station and freight depot are being built at the latter place.

J.R. Gallemore and C.B. Hyde of Chariton County have purchased the Franklin County Observer.

The association of Missouri River steamboatmen held its second annual meeting at the courthouse here last Tuesday. The following were named directors: Capt. W.L. Heckmann, Wm. Thompson, George Vaughan, Gustave Wohld, Arthur Thompson, Aug. Wohlt, and OJ. Heckmann. Membership of the association is scattered through the territory from Ohio to California.
Miss Ella Buschmann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Buschmann, and Edmund Doll were married at Bay last Thursday. The young couple will make their home at Potsdam, where the groom is teaching school.
During the year 1912, there were 49 deaths and 51 births recorded with Dr. E.L. Haffner, registrar for Roark township.
Morrison-Richard’s new barbershop is nearing completion and will be ready for occupancy by Feb. 5.

Fr. Arsenius Fahle, beloved and revered priest, for many years stationed at Hermann and in charge of the Morrison congregation, died in Washington, Wednesday.
Miss Laura Roechrich has resigned her position as teacher in the high school. She will be employed as supervisor of employment and schools for women employers of the Western Union at Kansas City at a salary of $100 per month.

Plans are now being made for the Red Cross War Fund Campaign of 1943, to begin March 1 and end March 31. Gasconade County’s minimum share for the national and international needs of the organization, plus the needs of the local chapter, make the goal for the county $3700. Out of this the county organization retains $1200 for carrying on local work.
A recent congressional act raising the salaries of postal employees and putting them on the 48 hour instead of a 40 hour week went into effect last week. the increased work week has resulted in the restoration of Saturday afternoon delivery service.
Rev. Roy J. Stock has resigned as pastor of the Zion’s Ev. And Ref. Church at Bland and St. John’s Ev. Church at Woollam , effective March. Stock has been pastor of the Gasconade churches for the past three years.
A.G. Jackson, county superintendent of schools, said this week that clerks of county school districts must withhold the 5 percent Victory Tax from salaries of teachers, and any other empoyers, earning over $624 a year, regardless of marital status.
Stonyhill – Sunday forenoon was like an ideal spring day. The thermometer was up to above 70 degrees, but by the evening it was down to 24 degrees and Monday morning it was down to 4 degrees above zero.

A class of 85, the largest in its history, will be initiated by Hermann Aerie 1328 Fraternal Order of Eagles, here Sunday afternoon.
Linda Sue Jacquin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Jacquin, is the winner of the First Baby of the Year Contest here. Linda Sue was born at the hospital in Washington last Friday evening.
A free polio clinic will be held Feb. 6, at the Hermann Elementary School sponsored by the county unit of the Natl. Found. For infantile paralysis. Dr. W.A. Jeter and Dr. S.W. Gaston will be in charge.

Mrs. Virginia LeBrell was chosen chairman of the Gasconade County unit of the American Cancer Society.
Donald Althauser, Wesley Beckmann, Mrs. Dorothy Oncken and Raymond Kunz were elected to three year terms as member of the council of St. Paul United Church of Christ.
Richard Greene has been named as winner of the University of Missouri Curators’ scholarship at Hermann High School.
Marine Lance Cpl. Larry Horstmann was wounded in action in Vietnam Thursday of last week. After being treated for fragmentary shell wounds in the left leg he returned to duty.
Spt. G.W. Heying presented his formal letter of resignation to the directors of the Gasconade County R-1 School District at their monthly meeting. The resignation which is to become effective Jan. 31, was accepted by the board. Fred J. James, who will succeed Mr. Heying, as superintendent of schools on Feb. 1 was present at last week's meeting.
R. Emmett King, director of manufacturing of International Shoe Co., will retire from active service next Thursday after 40 years with the company. He will be succeeded by Perry H. Jones.

Hermann finally received its first measurable snowfall of the year Friday when 2.8 inches of the white stuff fell during the day.
The City Council agreed Monday night to abandon a plan to appoint someone to replace resigned Alderman John Dohanic, which means that the seat will remain vacant until after the April city election.
At the Jaycee Awards Banquet Saturday night the following received outstanding achievement awards: Opal Rethemeyer, the distinguished citizen award; Terry Hammer, the distinguished service award; Harold Gloe, the young farmer award; and Josie Erfling, the outstanding young woman award.
Four Hermann High School students will be part of the 83 member Four Rivers Conference Board. They are Carol Delaney on flute; Keith Branson on clarinet; Nike Thomas on alto saxophone; and Mark LeBeau on trumpet.

A fire early Saturday morning destroyed a mobile home near Bay , killing two small children. The parents received burns and were treated at the Hermann Area District Hospital.
The Hermann City Council is in a pickle, and its going to take a 15 percent increase in trash collection rates to solve the problem. The increase will go into effect Feb. 10.
