Mary Kunstmann, Chair
Hermann Tourism Commission
The Hermann Tourism Commission met in special session on Wednesday, December 23, to consider a report from the Vision/Finance Committee regarding two time-sensitive issues: the closing of the Hermann Area Chamber of Commerce’s Welcome Center on December 31, 2020, and the ending of the Website Agreement on January 15, 2021.
The Vision/Finance Committee reported that because there is not time to complete the necessary discussions and required decision-making process for establishing a City visitor center by December 31, an interim solution must be found. The Tourism Commission recommended that a new cell phone and number be obtained which can be used to answer visitor’s questions from any location and at hours a visitor center is not open.
Update on December 31, 2020: Tammy Bruckerhoff, Tourism Director, and Mark Wallace, City Administrator, have obtained a new cell phone for visitor inquiries. The number is 573-789-0771. Bruckerhoff has published the number, as well as information about the services currently available at the Amtrak station, on VisitHermann.com and on VisitHermann social media.
The Committee also told the Commission that an existing facility can be used by visitors until an official location is selected. The Hermann Amtrak Station, located at Gutenberg and Wharf Streets, is open from 8 am to 8 pm every day. It has seating, restrooms, free Wi-Fi and electrical outlets for recharging mobile devices, as well as information about Hermann businesses and menus from local restaurants.
No recommendations were made regarding a visitor center location at the meeting. The Hermann Tourism Commission asked the Vision/Finance Committee to invite the Hermann Area Chamber of Commerce to meet to discuss details of their offer of the use of the space formerly used by the Welcome Center, as well as other areas in which the City and Chamber can collaborate to serve our visitors for the benefit of tourism in Hermann.
The Committee also recommended guidelines for businesses who wish to participate in marketing with Visit Hermann. These guidelines will replace those in the Website Agreement which ends on January 15. The Tourism Commission will recommend these to the Board of Aldermen in January.
The Tourism Commission regularly meets at the City offices and via Zoom on the last Tuesday of the month at 10 am.
