The Hermann district school board, at the annual school meeting, submitted to the qualified voters the proposition of raising the tax levy for school purposes from 40 cents to 50 cents on the $100 valuation. Increased attendance makes the proposed increase necessary. Four years ago 260 children attended and now 311 are enrolled which will increase to 325 this fall.

Ema Poeschel of Hermann won the first-place gold medal in the annual county spelling contest last Saturday with a grade of 96 per cent. Other winners were Norman Begemann, Hermann, 93 ½; Clara Idel, Woolam, 92; Herbert Apprill, Little Berger, 90; and Oliver Schreimann, Swiss, 90.
Alfred Cramer last week sold his property at Stolpe, including his ferry boat, to Henry Ruegge at $1300.
John Helmendach, who has been successfully farming for the past fifty years, has sold his farm on the Fork to Gottlieb Gumper at $4000 and will probably move to Hermann to enjoy the sunset of life in our beautiful town.
Leo Bohl of Potsdam has purchased the 40-acre farm of Henry Ruegge near Stolpe, including stock and machinery, at $2700.

A fire which swept Moberly’s business section Monday destroyed the Moberly Overland Garage, owned by August Leisner, formerly of Hermann.
Geo. H. Klenk is a candidate for re-election to the office of Mayor of Hermann.
Gen. J. Pershing has requested shipment of 18,850 pairs of shoes for each 25,000 men monthly, which is approximately nine pair per man per year.

The new highway from Gasconade to the John Schneider place at First Creek is practically finished, with the exception of graveling from Gasconade to the Charles Bock place.
There has been no kidnapping in Hermann for several weeks.

Persons who live in hotels and take their meals there regularly do not need their war ration books while there, and for that reason anyone who lives in such establishments for seven days or more, and who takes eight or more meals a week there, must turn over his or her war ration book to the owner of the establishment. Books must be returned to the owner when the stay is terminated.
Uncle Sam’s new zinc coated penny has made its official debut. A supply of the new pennies, designed to save copper needed in the war effort, was delivered to the Treasury this week.

Pvt. Melvin O. Allemann, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Allemann of Hermann Route, and Pvt. Leon A. Breunig, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herb. Bruenig of Morrison, are scheduled to depart from Fort Benning, Ga., for Europe under “Operation Gyroscope.”
The Mo. Hwy. Commission has made an offer to purchase the Gasconade River Bridge at Gasconade for $200,000. The stockholders will meet March 21 to consider this offer.

Overwhelming approval of 75 to 4 was given the new building plans at the Hermann Methodist Church’s congregational meeting Sunday. Waldo Lionberger, building committee chairman, presented the plans to the congregation.
Corwin Fabrics is holding its grand opening this weekend. The firm is owned by Theo. Bocklage, and the new business is located at the Bocklage Bldg. on East First Street. Mrs. Kenneth Smith is manager.

After months of negotiations with the Union Electric Co., the Gasconade County Court Monday signed a funding agreement with the utility company that authorizes the payment of funds to the county for the preparation and implementation of the county’s Local Radiological Emergency Response Plan.

No, Hermann is not getting its own riverboat casino. But a proposition that is being placed on the April election ballot here was discussed at Monday’s City Council meeting.
