Hermann Elementary School Principal Kendra M. Brune provided the following report on an end-of-year celebration for the district's kindergarten classes, which was held May 13 at the high school:
May is a time for celebration in our elementary school. All students are happy to celebrate a job well done at the end of the school year.
This is no different for kindergarten students. Typically, each year students participate in a kindergarten celebration with songs, and shared readings from favorite classroom stories, while wearing a royal blue gown and receiving certificates from their teachers and principal.
This year, due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, things had to look a little different.
"We always knew we wanted to honor the hard work of our kindergarten students and teachers, but we had to think outside of the box for how we were going to do that," Brune said.
Brune, -- along with the kindergarten teachers, Jennifer Baynes, Lindsey Kopp, and Taylor Willimann and music teacher Aly Sachs -- worked together to develop an orderly and comprehensive plan for the celebration, while following guidelines set by the state for social distancing to ensure safety for the families.
"While the celebration isn't what staff or families are used to, we feel like we developed a plan that would highlight our students," Brune said. Each classroom had a separate program in the high school auditorium, rather than celebrating in one large group. Each student received a certificate in a safe procession organized by the staff. The students, who were dressed in gowns, participated in the choral readings of their favorite classroom stories, led by Mrs. Sachs.
Each student's name was called and he/she stepped onto the stage in a safe procession organized by the staff, with the certificates presented to them in a way that allowed families to take photos.
"Our kids and families were very respectful of the guidelines we put in place for the program. It was great to see so many students," said Brune. "They did a great job with only practicing through Zoom sessions or through email. We were happy that so many could attend."
