At 7:30 the doors to the Gasconade County Courthouse remained locked as officers performed security checks around the courthouse to include using K-9 units. Hermann’s police chief was seen at the memorial inside the courthouse speaking to officers before the suspect in Monday’s murder of a Hermann Police Officer. Signs were posted at the courthouse forbidding cell phones, cameras, audio and video recording devices in the courthouse by order of the presiding judge issued March 14th, 2023.
At around 7:45am officers from Gasconade County Sherriff and Hermann police department escorted the family into the courthouse and kept everyone else out until the family was settled. As the bells tolled 8am in Hermann the courthouse doors remained closed. Shortly after the bells tolled a Gasconade Sheriff’s deputy advised those outside that the court was having some technical video issues but would be open shortly.
By 8:10 am the press was allowed into the courthouse and had to undergo extensive security checks. As the press was entering the courtroom Judge Ada Brehe-Krueger Associate Circuit Judge entered her chambers.
The judge began questioning the defendant to ensure the video system was working properly. There was a public defender, Matthew Shellenberger, assigned to the case and was present in the courtroom.
The judge began reading the charges with the defendant unemotional except for shaking his head when the Murder in the first-degree charge was read. As the final four charges were read against the defendant, he displayed no emotion. The judge proceeded to read the range of punishments for the charges with 10 years to life and the death penalty being possible. When the outcome for first degree murder was announced the defendant showed no emotion or remorse.
When asked by the judge if the defendant acknowledged the charges and potential sentences the defendant responded with a yes. The judge then asked the defendant if he would be using the public defender. The defendant stated his mother had just died leaving him an inheritance and that he would try to use that money if he could for his defense but would use the public defender until then. The public defender said if the defendant engages an attorney he will withdraw as counsel.
The judge set a court date for April 19th, 2023, at 9:00am
