I’m looking for Baby New Year but can’t seem to find him. He is probably hiding with all my past resolutions. Like the one where I was going to keep my car spotless, inside and out. Or the one where I would floss twice a day instead of once. How about the one where I would stop all sugar. Battocletti’s knows the truth on that one. No more brats…ask Mike. Make my bed each day? I do that one. Stop smoking, I did that one 10 years ago. Lose weight? Again, Battocletti’s and Mike from Wurst Huas. Add Sugar Momma’s, and 4th Street Pizza, Ricky’s Chocolate box and Downtown Deli. Weight loss is a fantasy resolution lost way beyond the other side of the galaxy.
Did you receive anything electronics for Christmas? Amazon wants it’s Alexa voice assistant to be everywhere and she is! Answering questions and talking back. I don’t like it. Just remember to be polite to it. When the robot uprisings come, you'll be the last to go.
We get a snow storm then its 70 degrees. Snow suits to swim suits. What does it all mean? It’s supposed to be a cold winter and I’m ready. I cannot stand hot weather. I’ve always been hot natured. When I was a kid my mom used to tell me to get my coat on all because I was going out to play in the snow. On Christmas this year I wanted to turn on the air conditioner but my husband wouldn’t hear of it.
I just thought of this year’s resolution. I hope this one won’t get lost into the abyss. I love America. I love its flag. This year I pledge to be more respectful to the stars and stripes. A veteran told me the other day that surrounding towns, like Montgomery City, put Hermann to shame when it comes to flag etiquette. During parades, the children all stop their candy gathering and salute the flag! WOW! That is great. When I think about our older veterans marching in front of Hermann parades, I feel proud. But do I stop what I’m doing to salute the flag? No. Here is my 2020 resolution: be respectful to the flag following these guidelines. All persons present in uniform (military, police, fire, etc.) should render the military salute. Members of the armed forces and veterans who are present but not in uniform may render the military salute.
All other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, or if applicable, remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart.
The flag has been used to display our nationalism, as well as our rebellion, and everything else in between. The flag is so important that its history tells the story of America itself. It represents the freedom, dignity, and true meaning of being an American.
Now that’s something to salute.
