On 9/14/2019, while on routine patrol, a member of the GCSO was driving by a structure in the 1700 Block of Highway 50. The Deputy noticed a red Chevrolet Silverado pickup parked off the roadway near the driveway leading to the structure. The Deputy then called for assistance from another Deputy.

Upon approaching the pickup, the Deputies noticed the truck was unoccupied. The Deputies, along with a Trooper from the Missouri State Highway Patrol then went to the structure and noticed an open door. The Deputies all noticed several items on the ground that appeared to have come from the structure.

As the Deputies attempted to make entry into the structure via the front door they were met with resistance as someone inside was attempting to hold the door closed and prevent the Deputies from entering. Officers were able to see a white female inside the building. The female, later identified as Tonya Gerlt, age 34 of Berger was then taken into custody. One Deputy and the Trooper then located a male subject, later identified as Kenneth Ball, age 42 of Berger. inside and he too was taken into custody. Both were arrested for Burglary 2nd Degree and Trespass 1st Degree.

Both Gerlt and Ball were transported to the Crawford County Jail. In accordance with the recent Missouri Supreme Court ruling, both were later released on a summons to appear in court later. The property the two were attempting to steal was returned to the owner. Both Gerlt and Ball are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
