Hermann Fuel Mart to close;
new Casey's planned on site
It will be the end of an era next week, as one of Hermann's three convenience stores -- Hermann Fuel Mart -- closes its doors to customers.
The business, located at 115 State Route 19 South, will have its last day in business on Tuesday, March 30, said store owner Art Hoffman, president of Arts Inc., Montgomery City.
Hoffman said he has decided to get out of the business that involves a lease of the property, which also includes Hermann's former Hardee's restaurant. The move will make way for preparations to later open a new and larger Casey's General Store for Hermann at the building. The city's present Casey's is located at 811 Market St.
Hermann Fuel Mart began its operations back in February 2000, said Hoffman. He reminisced briefly for the Advertiser-Courier on his local business involvement.
"I thought there was an opportunity for another convenience store here," he said of the decision to open the business. "It's been great working with the community. They patronized me," he said, adding he succeeded in developing a number of relationships in Hermann over the years. "The Hermann community's been great to me."
Katrie Petru, a spokeswoman for Casey's corporate office in Iowa, confirmed the company's plans for a new store in Hermann. No dates for the switchover from the current store were announced as yet. No other details have been provided.
"We are replacing the existing store and will have a full announcement once it's closer to the store opening," Petru said.
Hermann City Administrator Mark Wallace said Casey's was scheduled to deliver plans to the city for the remodeling it intends to accomplish for the new store.
