A longtime Hermann institution, Battocletti Bake Shoppe, closed its doors for good on Saturday.
Co-owner Dawn Battocletti reminisced on the family's involvement in the business for the Advertiser-Courier. The shop operated for nearly 29 years, she said.
Customer interest blossomed in a big way in the time since the closing was announced, Battocletti said, with some people even arriving in Hermann via plane flights -- just to capture and savor one of the special treats one more time. Lines of customers have extended well beyond the front door.
Battocletti said the bakery had received "tons of positive feedback" over the past couple of weeks.
"It's bittersweet," she said through tears. "It's my life."
Her husband Tom plans to retire, and the couple has chosen to seek a sale of the building, located at 308 Market St.
"We're hoping to find someone that will buy the business," she said, admitting that marketing the address's availability will not be easy. "We will sell the recipes….We're going to try to find the most perfect fit."
According to Battocletti, bake shops such as this one have fast become a dying breed across the American business landscape.
"It was the best part of our lives," she added. "And we're going to miss it."
