The Gasconade R-1 (Hermann) School District continues to press forward with its program for summer school's 2020 edition, with safeguards in place for the pandemic.
The session will commence on Tuesday, July 7, with classes continuing through July 31. Most enrollments were asked to be completed by families by June 19. The summer program will be open to students from any school district and comes at no cost.
Students entering kindergarten through the third grade will be in class at Hermann Elementary, while students in the fourth- through eighth-grades will be in session at Hermann Middle School. Bus service will be available, and breakfast and lunch will be provided. Class times will be 7:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Superintendent Dr. Scott Smith told the Advertiser-Courier the session will emphasize the use of smaller class sizes and disinfectant for the students. Face masks can be worn, he added, but will not be required. Hand sanitizer will be available, and there will be frequent handwashings. Social distancing will be practiced as much as possible during classtime.
For example, elementary pupils will have breakfast in their classrooms and lunch schedules will be arranged in such a way that ensures classes are not intermingling, according to Smith.
Summer school will focus on the core academic subjects of reading, writing, math, science, and social studies, utilizing various activities. Students entering kindergarten, for instance, will practice skills such as letter and sound recognition, name writing, counting, and pre-reading.
"The experience is designed to be both academically stimulating and entertaining for students of all levels," stated information on the district's website. "Teachers strive to provide each child with the academic support they need to keep their minds strong over the summer months."
High school coursework will also be available, providing credit recover and initial credit opportunities for students.
School bus routes will be different from routes used during the regular academic year.
