The Rhineland Post 147 AAA team opened their season in a big way over Memorial Day weekend bringing home the hardware from the Hannibal Post 55 Memorial Day Tournament. Participants in the tournament were Marceline, Kirksville, Moberly, Elsberry, St. Charles, two Hannibal teams, and Rhineland. The Rhineland gang traveled to Clemens Field in Hannibal on Saturday for a pair of pool games. Our Rhineland team drew Moberly and Kirksville for the pool round. Rhineland jumped out 3-0 in the first inning of game one against Moberly. That lead would not hold as Moberly chipped away and eventually won the game 5-3. The good news for Rhineland was that all pitchers were kept on the available list on the pitch count chart for game #2 and the bracket round. In their second pool play contest, with a great pitching performance by left-hander Reese Rehmert, the Rhineland bats came alive as they handed eventual runner up Kirksville a 12-1 loss. The split earned Rhineland the 3 seed for Sunday’s 8 team single elimination bracket.
The Rhineland dudes traveled back to Hannibal for an 11:00 contest with the 6 seeded team from Marceline. Post 147 made quick work of Marceline and eliminated them with a 15-0 blowout. The semi final game was a rematch with the Moberly team who had beaten Rhineland in pool play. This time it would be different. In a back and forth affair Rhineland scored in the top of the 7th to take a 4-3 lead and with older brother Trent Anderson taking the mound in relief after a solid 6 from Parker Anderson Post 147 held on to advance to the Championship game and a rematch with Kirksville.
This one proved to be much more competitive than the previous day’s match up. This time Rhineland would send the other twin to the bump. Kirksville would now have to deal with Rane Rehmert and he did not disappoint. In a very well played game that saw a tie score heading to the 7th Rane was crafty. In the top of the 7th Kirksville managed to get 3 runs across before once again Trent Anderson came on to get the third out. That sent the game to the bottom of the 7th with Rhineland trailing 7-4 and down to their last 3 outs. The inning began with a great idea by Ethan Towery when he attempted a bunt to use his speed against the opponent, unfortunately for Post 147 and their fans he just got under it, popping out to the pitcher. That brought Seth Wilkerson to the plate. Seth was able to capitalize on being fast as he hit a ground ball in the hole and easily beat it out for a hit. Even with a 3 run lead Kirksville was concerned with Wilkerson’s speed and on an attempted pick off the pitcher threw the ball into right field allowing him to move all the way to third. Chase McKague was now at the plate and drew a walk making it first and third, with just one out. Rhineland’s 3-hole hitter Parker Anderson now stepped to the dish and promptly smoked a double down the left field line scoring Wilkerson making it a 2 run game and advancing McKague to third. Kirksville then went to their bullpen with Trent Anderson coming to the plate. On the first pitch the new pitcher threw a wild pitch and McKague scored making it a one run game as Parker Anderson now stood at third with the tying run.. On the next pitch Rhineland’s clean up man smashed the ball into the right center field gap tying the score and racing into 3rd with a triple. The winning run now was 90 feet away as Trevor Abernathy stepped to the plate. On the second pitch he saw Abernathy unloaded and drove the ball into the left center field gap sending Anderson home and the Championship trophy south to Rhineland! It was a great way to start the Summer Legion season. Rhineland finished 4-1 for the weekend and brought home the first place trophy.
