excels at Crossroads

The Hermann Ladycats varsity volleyball team came away from a weekend tournament in Illinois with a trio of great wins.

The Crossroads Classic, held in Effingham, Ill., drew 21 teams this year. Hermann placed 7th in the Gold Division and also won in its pool in pool play. Then the top 8 teams played in the Gold Division, the middle 8 teams played in the Silver, and the rest played in the Bronze division.

Coach Phil Landolt said this was only the second time Hermann played in the Gold Division, with Hermann also finishing seventh the last time it played in the Gold Division. All told, Hermann collected three wins against two losses during the weekend in Illinois.

First, on Friday, Sept. 10, Hermann trounced Champaign Centennial 2-0 (25-8, 25-13). Grace Godat led with nine points and also had two blocks, while Chelsey Moeckli had 7 and Cydney Moeckli had 6 along with 23 assists. Holly Heldt had 12 kills on 22 attempts.

Later that night, the Ladycats defeated Wheaton St. Francis 2-1 (22-25, 25-19, 25-23). Heldt had nine points to go with 11 kills out of 32 attempts and four blocks, and Cydney Moeckli had eight points with 24 assists. Tirzah Dodorico had six. Malerie Schutt had 10 kills out of 22 attempts.

Hermann's next tournament win came on Saturday afternoon, when they dominated Fairfield 2-0 (25-22, 25-23). Godat had seven points and four kills, while Cydney Moeckli had seven points and 24 assists. Heldt had 10 kills on 23 attempts, while Malerie Schutt had eight kills on 21 attempts. The Ladycats lost out to Plainfield North earlier Saturday, 2-0 (25-20, 25-19), and to Edwardsville 2-0 (25-17, 25-20).

On Thursday, Sept. 9, the Ladycats won 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-19) at home against Fatima. Godat had 16 points, while Chelsey Moeckli had 13 points. Cydney Moeckli had eight points to go with 25 assists. Heldt had 17 kills on 30 attempts and seven blocks. The jayvee won 2-0 (25-20, 27-25) and the C-Team won 2-0 (25-18, 25-22).

On Tuesday, Sept. 7, Hermann defeated Blair Oaks at home by 3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 26-24, 25-22). Cydney Moeckli had 18 points and 38 assists. Heldt had 18 kills on 52 attempts and six blocks. Godat also had six blocks and eight kills on 21 attempts. The jayvee lost 2-0 (14-25, 23-25), while the freshmen team won 2-0 (25-10, 25-17).
