It was an entertaining game Monday night in the Hermann High School gymnasium, but the Lady Bearcat basketball team came up short 53-65 against a tough Southern Boone County squad. The game was fast-paced and there were lots of steals from both teams up and down the court.
The Eagles called a time out at 5:54 left in the first quarter, as the Lady Bearcats came out roaring with a 10-2 lead. Hermann Coach Andy Emmons cautioned his girls they wouldn’t have this advantage for long and he was right, as the Eagles tied the game at 13-13 with 2:14 to end the first period. Quincy Erickson scored, followed up with a three-pointer from Grace Winkelmann to put the Bearcats on top 18-13 at the end of the first period.
It didn’t take the Eagles long to adjust to the Bearcats defense and they started pressing hard, taking the lead 21-20 for the first time of the evening with 5:35 on the clock. The game kept its fast pace and the Eagles scored five points in the last minute of the first half putting them on top 33-30.
The third quarter, the Eagles swooped the court scoring 9 points before the Bearcats could break the pace of the game when Grace Winkelmann was fouled. She sunk both of her free throws and Grace Godat was able to pick up five points, but the Eagles kept charging and scored four keeping a 10 point advantage, 47-37 with 3:30 to play in the third period.
Anytime it appeared the Bearcats could get some scoring momentum, the Eagles would sink a couple of three-pointers, making it difficult to close the gap. Hermann picked up a quick seven, with Maya Wideman hitting a trey and Erickson and Winkelmann each scoring, narrowing the score to five points (50-55) with 3:26 on the clock to end the game.
The Eagles hit three free throws and scored two baskets before Bearcat Macie Witthaus was able to sink a three-pointer. The Eagles continued to hit their foul shot free throws, keeping the Bearcats at a 10 point distance. After a couple more Eagle free throws, it was the Eagle’s game 65-53.
Grace Winkelman led the scoring for the Bearcats with 16 points, followed by Quincy Erickson with 15. Grace Godat had 11 points for the game.
The Lady Bearcats take on the Montgomery County Wildcats this Thursday at home, with the JV game starting at 6 p.m. in the Hermann High School gym.
